Position Summary:

The primary duty of a school counselor is to ensure that students have access to the resources necessary for academic and social development. By utilizing leadership, advocacy and collaboration, school counselors promote student success, provide preventative services and respond to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that address academic, career and social development for students.

 

1. Qualifications. The School Counselor shall hold at least a Master’s degree from an approved institution and hold an AZ Counselor Certificate. It is preferred that (s)he shall have at least three years of successful counseling experience. 

 

2. Line of Authority. The School Counselor shall be directly responsible to the Director of Learning Support. 

 

3. Performance Responsibilities. The School Counselor shall have performance responsibilities in the following areas:

 

Direct and Indirect Student Services

  • Design and implement instruction aligned to ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success in large-group, classroom, small-group and individual settings.
  • Provide appraisal and advisement in large-group classroom, small-group and individual settings. 
  • Provide short-term counseling in small-group and individual settings.
  • Make referrals to appropriate school and community resources.
  • Consult to support student achievement and success.
  • Collaborate with families, teachers, administrators, other school staff and education stakeholders for student achievement and success.

Planning and evaluation

  • Create school counseling program beliefs, vision and mission statements aligned with the school and district. 
  • Identify gaps in achievement, attendance, discipline, opportunity and resources.
  • Develop school counseling program goals based on student data.
  • Develop and implement action plans aligned with program goals and student data.
  • Evaluate and report program results to the school community.
  • Use time appropriately according to national recommendations and student/school data.
  • Establish agreement with the principal and other administers about the comprehensive school counseling program.
  • Establish and convene an advisory council for the comprehensive school counseling
  • Use appropriate school counselor performance appraisal process.

 

Other Duties – Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as the Director of Learning Support, Superintendent, and Governing Board may assign from time to time.
